How the EKOPEL Pouring Technique Works

See how you can resurface your bathtub in just a few hours using EKOPEL 2K Classic, Optimum, or Gold with the proven pouring technique.

The detailed process is demonstrated in the video. Please follow this link.

Frequently Asked Questions

What sets EKOPEL 2K Classic, Optimum, and Gold apart?

All EKOPEL 2K materials are specially formulated for resurfacing old bathtubs and are applied using a pouring technique. They create a smooth, thick, and durable surface with excellent adhesion.

EKOPEL 2K Classic cures in approximately 48 hours and is especially well-suited for DIY enthusiasts due to its longer working time.

EKOPEL 2K Optimum cures within about 24 hours and is ideal when the bathtub needs to be back in use sooner.

EKOPEL 2K Gold also cures in around 24 hours and provides enhanced UV protection. If your bathroom has a window or the bathtub is exposed to sunlight, we recommend EKOPEL 2K Gold.

What is the difference between EKOPEL 2K and EKOPEL Roll-On?

EKOPEL 2K is applied using a casting process. The material flows evenly over the surface, creating a particularly thick, smooth, and glossy coating.

EKOPEL Roll-On is applied in two coats using a roller. It is especially suitable when the drain cannot be removed or when a simpler application with a roller is preferred. Roll-On can also be used on wall and floor tiles.

Is EKOPEL 2K suitable for my bathtub?

EKOPEL 2K is suitable for steel, cast iron, ceramic, fiberglass, and previously coated bathtubs.

For acrylic bathtubs, use is only recommended if the walls are stable and not flexible. If the surface moves or gives under pressure, we do not recommend applying the coating.

How much material do I need for a bathtub or shower tray?

For a standard bathtub up to 170 × 80 cm, you will need an EKOPEL 2K set with 2.4 L.

For larger bathtubs, we recommend an additional 1.2 L set.

For shower trays up to 90 × 90 cm, a 1.2 L set is usually sufficient. For larger shower areas, we recommend a 2.4 L set.

What else do I need for application?

The EKOPEL 2K set already includes the base material and essential accessories.

Additionally, you will need masking tape, protective film or paper for the floor, a hairdryer or heat gun, a cup with a capacity of about 400-500 ml, tools for removing or opening the drain, a knife or cutter, cleaning cloths, and a solvent for cleaning tools.

We also recommend wearing clothing that can get dirty.

How should the bathroom be prepared?

Before application, the bathroom should be thoroughly cleaned. Remove dust from shelves, walls, ceiling, and surfaces to prevent any particles from contaminating the new coating.

Take out towels, toiletries, and any loose items from the bathroom. Windows should remain closed during the process to keep dust and insects off the surface.

The room temperature should be at least +20 °C starting one day before application and maintained throughout the curing period.

How should the bathtub be prepared?

The bathtub must be clean, dry, free of grease, and free from silicone, limescale, rust, and loose old coatings.

All silicone residues must be completely removed, as the material will not reliably adhere to them. Limescale deposits, rust spots, and loose old coatings must also be removed.

Deep damage, grooves, or chipped areas over 1 mm should be filled with epoxy or polyester filler before coating and then sanded smooth.

How is the material mixed?

Pour the entire Component B into the bucket with Component A. Thoroughly mix the material using the supplied wooden stirrer.

Stir vigorously for about 10 minutes to ensure there are no unmixed residues on the bottom or sides. Then let the mixture rest for approximately 5 minutes before stirring again for another 5 minutes.

The material is now ready to be applied.

How is EKOPEL 2K applied?

EKOPEL 2K is not applied with a roller or brush, but poured.

Use a cup with a capacity of around 400-500 ml and pour the product evenly onto the edges and walls of the bathtub. The material flows slowly downward, spreading across the surface.

This pouring method creates an exceptionally smooth, thick, and glossy coating.

Does the drain need to be removed or sealed?

If possible, we recommend removing the drain or at least covering the drain opening. This allows excess material to drain away cleanly.

If the drain cannot be removed, the drain opening must be carefully sealed. Cover the opening with paper, secure it firmly with masking tape, and carefully cut the tape along the contour.

The overflow should also be removed or carefully masked off.

What temperature is important for application?

The room temperature should be at least +20°C. This temperature should be maintained one day before application, during processing, and throughout curing.

For easier handling, we recommend warming Component A to approximately +30°C before use. To do this, place the bucket in warm water or store it in a warm location the day before.

Temperatures that are too low can impair flow behaviour and significantly extend curing time.

When can the bathtub be used again?

At a room temperature of approximately +24 °C, the bathtub can be used again cautiously after about 24 to 48 hours, depending on the product. At around +21 °C, we recommend waiting 2-3 days before using the bathtub. At lower temperatures, curing may take longer. Bottles, soap containers, pets, and products containing dyes such as hair colour or coloured bath additives should only be introduced after approximately 7-14 days.

What to do about drips, dust, insects, or minor imperfections?

Small dust particles, insects, drips, or surface irregularities can be carefully treated after curing.

Minor imperfections can be smoothed with fine sandpaper and then polished with a polishing paste. For small scratches or damaged areas, we recommend using a repair kit.

Deep damage should be repaired as soon as possible to prevent water from penetrating beneath the coating.

How do I clean and maintain the coated bathtub?

Use mild bathroom cleaners without harsh abrasives. Cleaners based on mild acids are generally suitable.

Avoid stiff brushes, scouring pads, and strongly abrasive cleaning agents. Residues from hair dye, coloured bath additives, or cosmetic products should be removed immediately.

Proper care significantly extends the lifespan of the coating.

Is the material harmful to health or odour-intensive?

EKOPEL 2K is virtually odourless and contains no strong-smelling solvents. Any slight scent dissipates quickly.

The product has been tested according to DIN EN 71-3. However, we still recommend using standard protective gear such as gloves, safety goggles, and ensuring good ventilation during application.

Avoid contact with skin and eyes.

How should residues be disposed of and how should the material be stored?

Cured material can generally be disposed of with household waste. Uncured material residues must be disposed of as hazardous waste.

Liquid leftovers can be mixed together and disposed of after they have fully cured.

Store the material in a dry place, tightly sealed, and at temperatures between +5 and +35 °C. The shelf life is 2 years from the production date.

How long is the material shelf life and how durable is the coating?

The material has a shelf life of 2 years from the production date when stored dry, well sealed, and at temperatures between +5 and +35 °C. The product can be used within this period.

With proper surface preparation, correct application, and regular care, the new coating can last for many years.

The actual durability depends greatly on the surface preparation, application process, cleaning, and daily use.

Can I use EKOPEL 2K in colour?

Yes, EKOPEL 2K can be coloured with the appropriate EKOPEL colour pastes.

The colour should be added to component A before mixing with component B. The required amount depends on the specific colour chart.

Alternatively, pre-coloured versions can be used if available.
